Egusi originates from West Africa, particularly Nigeria, Ghana, and Benin, as a staple food for centuries, with the word "egusi" itself being of Yoruba origin, though enjoyed across many tribes and nations, made from ground melon seeds that thicken soups and stews, thriving in tropical climates.
